Factors That Affect the Price & Quality of Onyx
Onyx is one of the more accessible gemstones in terms of price — but 'accessible' does not mean flat. The gap between a ₹100-per-carat onyx and a ₹3,500-per-carat one is real and visible if you know what to look for.
1. Color — The Biggest Factor
For any onyx variety, color is everything. The depth, consistency, and saturation of color determines a stone's grade more than any other factor.
For black onyx stone, the ideal is a deep, even, jet black across the entire surface — no brownish tinge at the edges, no grey patches, no variation in depth. A natural black onyx stone with this uniformity and a smooth, high-gloss polish commands a premium. Stones that look blackish-grey or show color inconsistency under light are lower grade.
For green onyx stone, a rich, vibrant medium-to-deep green with even saturation is most desirable. Pale, yellowish, or greyish-green stones are priced considerably lower. The green onyx stone price per carat goes up sharply when the color is vivid, consistent, and close to a true emerald-green.
For white onyx gemstone, the translucency and milk-white consistency determine quality. For red onyx gemstone, depth and evenness of the red tone matter most.
One important thing to note: dyeing is extremely common in the onyx market — particularly for black onyx. Most commercial black onyx is chalcedony dyed with iron salts. This is accepted industry practice for jewelry, but for astrological use, natural untreated onyx is always preferred. The original black onyx stone price is higher than dyed material for this reason.
2. Surface Quality and Clarity
Black onyx is opaque, so traditional clarity grading does not apply. Instead, look at the surface: it should be smooth, scratch-free, and evenly polished. Any pits, nicks, or dull patches on a black onyx stone reduce its value noticeably.
Green onyx can be semi-translucent, so clarity matters more here. Stones with minimal inclusions, even texture, and good translucency are higher quality. Bands, fibrous structures, and moss-like patterns are natural to onyx and not necessarily flaws — but they reduce the stone's grade if they disrupt the color uniformity.
3. Cut and Shape
Onyx cabochon is the most popular cut for astrological use. The smooth dome shape maximizes skin contact, and the lack of faceting preserves more of the rough. Black onyx cabochon and green onyx cabochon are available in round, oval, and cushion shapes.
Faceted black onyx and faceted green onyx are cut for jewelry, where reflecting light matters. The precision of faceting adds to the price because it requires more skilled cutting and more rough material is lost in the process.
Black onyx tumbled stones and raw black onyx pieces are the most budget-friendly options, commonly used in crystal healing or as pocket stones. Black onyx palm stone shapes — smooth, flat, and palm-fitting — are a step up from tumbled in terms of polish and finishing, and are popular with meditation practitioners.
Round black onyx beads for bracelets and malas are priced based on bead diameter and surface polish consistency.
4. Natural vs. Treated
Always confirm this before buying. For jewelry, treated or dyed onyx is perfectly acceptable. For astrological wearing, an untreated natural onyx stone is what you want — otherwise the energetic properties you are buying it for simply are not present in the stone.
Ask for a gemological certificate from GIA, IGI, or a reputable Indian lab. The original onyx stone price for certified, natural material starts from around ₹500 per carat and can go up significantly for premium pieces.
5. Price Overview (India)
Black onyx stone price: ₹80 to ₹3,500+ per carat. Budget polished cabochons start at ₹80–₹200 per carat. Certified natural deep-black stones suitable for astrological use run ₹800–₹3,500 per carat.
Green onyx stone price: ₹200 to ₹3,000+ per carat. Standard quality natural green onyx cabochon starts around ₹300–₹500 per carat. Vivid, clean, large-carat green onyx gems go up to ₹2,000–₹3,000+ per carat.
Onyx ratna price for loose certified stones used in astrological settings typically falls in the ₹500–₹2,000 per carat range.
Black onyx price per carat for fine jewelry-grade polished stones starts from ₹800 upwards depending on size and finish.
6. Origin
Indian onyx — sourced primarily from Gujarat and Rajasthan — is widely trusted for astrological use. Brazilian green onyx is popular for jewelry because of its consistent, saturated color. Uruguayan onyx is also high quality for the black variety. For astrological purposes, Indian-origin green onyx stone is generally the preferred choice among Vedic practitioners.
